That is true - it doesn't seem THAT hard. Maybe i will go ahead and pick one of those boom boxes up. They are certainly easier to find than the NEC cdroms.

LOL I couldn't find a single NEC drive. But then curiosity got the best of me, and I started reading that thread. And if you can solder and mount stuff, it actually looks really easy.

Did you get a chance to look at this PDF, which explains all the component modifications?

I thought about that - the only problem i have is that i don't have a TV. so having something that depends on a monitor isn't really an option. I have looked into PS1 for that very reason - coax digital out and supposedly good sound.

for now i am going to stick with finding NEC external cdroms from the 90s. heh.

If i ever get a TV - the XBMC is probably what i will choose.

Harper,

Why couldn't you nab a cheap $50 xbox1, or old PS2? Don't both of those come with a optical out, and a remote option. Plus it could dubble as a cheap DVD player. And if you go thte Xbox Route, you could Softhack it (no mod chip required) and add Xbox Media Center (XBMC), which would give you a DivX player and a Upconverting DVD player as well as a Digital CD Player.
