Harper, that makes sense. Of course, a social graph is just a routing network (or 'federation' in some cases) and 'queues' just generalise presence and subscription -- think of making your (smtp) email buddy list into a twittergraph. That is what AMQP can do, and why it is interesting. I think XMPP is excellent also - they are quite complementary.

Hi Dmitriy,
Those are neat links. I haven't looked into them - but for what i am looking to use XMPP for, it isn't a queuing replacement. i think that a lot of people are looking to replace their messaging system with something like XMPP - and rabbitMQ may be a good option for them. For me, i want to work more in the data portabilty space - creating ways (using oauth and the like) for people to have their buddy list be their social graph. there is obviously more to it, but it is very much a topic that is interesting.

Have you heard of AMQP (Advanced Message Queuing Protocol) www.amqp.org and RabbitMQ as one of the implementations www.rabbitmq.com ?

Can be good alternatives to XMPP as your transport.
