Legally of course.
But everyday I am discovering new music and listening to interesting artists. The internet is awesome. I can’t really imagine what it would be like without it. I mean, I am able to think to myself “I would like to learn about classical music” and find a place that is offering an entire concert public domain.
it is great to see various modern artists like Trent Reznor and Radiohead abandoning Record labels and their past worlds and welcoming the new musical overlords.
Btw, I would like to learn about classical music. I am looking for something dark and brooding. Any ideas?

1Dude I think that is so cool as well… more bands should do what radiohead did.

2hmm, not too classical, but recently i’ve gotten into a contemporary of john cage named charlemagne palestine. the two works i have from him are “strumming music” and “continuous sound forms”

3Brahms is pretty bad ass, but not that dark and brooding. Ovchinnikov is really good too and a bit more intense but still not quite there. Ask me again next time you see me.

4Dark and Brooding? Get into the late Romantic Era composers. Wagner, Elgar, Bruch (Violin Concerto No.1, everything else from Bruch falls flat)… Those guys are pretty much nothing but brood and whine. Beethoven’s last works fall in there, too.
However, if those are too heavy for you (”wait, this isn’t what I meant when I said ‘classical’ and ‘dark’”), there’s always film scores. You’d be surprised how many dorks think they like classical music, but it turns out they’re really just into scores for films and video games. Really, don’t kid yourself. I thought I was into IDM at one time, turns out I just wanted to listen to Gabber/Hardcore.

5Not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but these are some of my favorites:
Jóhann Jóhannsson - IBM 1401, A User’s Manual
Arvo Pärt - Für Alina
Henryk Górecki - Symphony No. 3
If you want dark and brooding, I have alot of suggestions for dark ambient.

6Radiohead is un-abandoning the labels and shopping for a major to release the new album in CD form in Jan 08. On top of that, there will probbaly be more songs on the actual RIAA-published disc.
Originally I had pegged the radiohead thing as a simple marketing ploy, but now it appears to be a marketing ploy AND a money grab. nice.

7I’d recommend “Music for Prague, 1968″ by Karel Husa. I have yet to find an awesome recording of it, but managed to pick up a few university recordings on eBay.
the back story is pretty interesting:
