I guess i have ran through most of the softwares... I host sites for friends - so i want the easiest and least painful way to allow them to blog.

With that said: I used to love movable type - and when it came out i migrated all my friends to it - from greymatter. MOvable type was amazing and easy. It just worked. I still have friends rocking it as a content manager. It is amazing and robust. But eventually i realized that it was causing crazy load on my servers - it being perl/cgi and what not.

So i started looking for alternatives. I found wordpress around the same time that movable type went pay - and i haven't looked back. I think that wordpress is a bit harder to use off the bat. But it is just as featureful.

Now in regards to services like typepad and wordpress.com - i think that you can't really compare it. There is nothing like hosting and running your own blog. However, some great blogs are on those services so obviously it isn't bad. i just like to think that its mine...

hope this helps

Harper,

How, in your opinion, do you rank Wordpress to other services such as TypePad, MoveableType, etc.? I get this question all the time when people inquire about a blogs and blog software. I've only used Blogger and WordPress, however, would be interested to hear your take on the issue. Seems to me that a lot of sites on TypePad, MoveableType, etc often have the same look and feel, although I assume that most are general users and dont bother with customization. Just wondering.

Harper,

Great synopsis on setting up a blog. Good point about using Askimet...One thing that I've noticed is that som hosts disable editing your WordPress blog from the admin and rarely give access to .htaccess, which can be a problem and throw a 500 error and the eventual support call. This happened to me with one host when changing the permalink structure from ID to name based...Great article!
