So awhile ago i was cruising the make flickr tags and i noticed the juicebox frame and i thought “i like frames. they are fun.” So i decided to go get some. unfortunantly they were all gone from walmat, or target so i went to the linux-hacker boards and found a dude who was selling some. I bought them right before it was posted to slashdot.
they arrived today.
So i immediately broke it apart. I barely had the batteries in before i destroyed the poor player. It looks to be a pretty cool device. The box itself runs uClinux and has a 2.75 inch 240×160 screen. The fact that it runs uClinux really makes the possible hackery cool. I would especially like to get shell on it and possibly create a fancy mini linux box. the uclinux link above details a jtag hookup. so i guess it is possible.
After i took it apart i dropped a bundle of pictures on the SD card and it worked. Pretty cool. now if i only haxored it all apart. mount it in a frame or something (this is real cool) and moved the buttons to another place. i could really do something exciting with it.
here are some pictures:
The Juicebox in its packaging
This is the top of the circuit board and the bottom of the lcd.
This is were i broke the backlight power connector.
The music video chip. bare.
The SD interface. bare. ;)
The Hot Hot Ladies i have put on my juicebox.
The test menu. btw - you can access the test menu by pressing the topmost and bottommost buttons on powerup.
I have placed a BUNDLE of pictures here. I will of course post updates when they occur. probably never ;)

1I have been looking to do this….the local Target still has a few on the clearance rack. Do you have to do anything do get it to display the pictures from the card, apart from sliding the card in? From the few posts I’ve read, I can’t tell if you have to gain access to the device and modify code or not.
If it just works when you put a card in, will it do a slideshow?

2Juicebox haxoring
Here are some photos and dissections of the Juicebox, a cheap LCD device that can play music and photos. It’s based on uClinux, so there are a few projects currently underway to do some neat things with it. And here’s a tip- to put the Juicebox int…

3In regards to where i got them - I picked them up off of the linux-hacker board. i would suggest there or possibly goiing to ebay. i thin i saw a couple of juiceboxes+mp3 kits for 30 bucks. which isn’t too bad. granted it isn’t 15 bucks. but it isn’t the 50 bucks that target is apparently selling them for now.

5“Do you have to do anything do get it to display the pictures from the card, apart from sliding the card in?”
All you have to do is convert the pictures to the format for the JuiceBox, and put them on the SD card. The Windows software included on with MP3 kit (that lets you use an SD card) converts images for you.

6“If it just works when you put a card in, will it do a slideshow?”
All you have to do to get a slideshow is to hit play on the ’show all’ selection on the picture menu. Hit the * button before starting the slideshow, and you can adjust the amount of time each image is displayed. (1 second to 1 minute)

7You are supposed to buy the starter kit ($35-$45). It consists of an overpriced SD/MMC card to proprietary juicebox adapter. And software. Basically, the juicebox is ready to do everything you want it to. But, in an attempt to make more money, you’re locked out of features until you buy the kit (SCAM!). There is NO good reason they couldn’t just make them with SD/MMC ports. And there is no good reason for the juiceboxe’s inability to view JPG images without converting them to JBP (juice proprietary format). No good reason = money for mattel.
The good news. The SD/MMC has already been hacked and image converting software is available for linux. So, don’t buy the kit. Save your money! It’s not necessary.

9I recently bought a Juicebox with the MP3 kit and software (just 10 euro…) But the CD does not work, so I can’t convert jpeg to jbp. Has anyone a copy of this CD for me?

12I went to KB on Nov 23, and they already had the kits out. They are random colors, and random “versions” of the juicebox OS. You grab a white box, and don’t know which color, carts, etc you are getting. I didn’t want to get an expensive mp3 player for my 5 year old daughter. I’m pretty happy since I already had an extra 512 SD card to put music on…plus pictures for her. This (http://vugo.com), however, is what I really want for her one day when she gets a little bit older and this stuff is a little bit cheaper since it is not so proprietary. You can do your own AVI, MPG-1, ASF, and WMV. Also pix as BMP, TIF, JPG, GIF, and PNG.

13Nico Bouwman, Daniel Newman: I made a Windows converter program that’s available on my website. It’s slow, and only can handle BMP->JBP, and JBP->BMP, also the BMP files have to be resized to 240×160 BEFORE you open it with my program (otherwise it gets clipped).
